Moving to a new country is often described as an “adventure,” but for many migrants and refugees, the reality can be a daunting journey filled with uncertainty. At Costa Connect Association, we believe that the key to successful integration isn’t just found in paperwork or language classes—it’s found in the great outdoors and the strength of community.
Why Adventure Education?
As we look forward to our 2025 project, “First Step is Half the Journey,” we are diving deep into Adventure Education. But what does this mean for a migrant youth in Benalmádena?
Adventure education isn’t just about physical activity; it’s about experiential learning. When young people face challenges—whether it’s navigating a mountain trail or working as a team to solve a problem—they develop:
-
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks.
-
Trust: Building bonds with peers from diverse backgrounds.
-
Mental Clarity: Reducing the anxiety and “acculturative stress” that comes with living in a new culture.
Bridging the Gap in Benalmádena
In our local community here on the Costa del Sol, we see incredible potential in our migrant residents. However, isolation is a common barrier. Through our Erasmus+ initiatives, we are creating “brave spaces” where newly arrived individuals can step out of their comfort zones in a safe, supported environment.
By moving the classroom from four walls to the natural beauty of Málaga, we break down the power dynamics and language barriers that often exist in formal settings. In the woods or on the coast, everyone is a student, and everyone is a leader.
Beyond 2025: Building Young Leaders
Our commitment doesn’t stop at integration. Our upcoming projects for 2026-2027 are designed to take these “first steps” and turn them into long-term leadership. We aren’t just helping migrants settle in; we are empowering them to become the next generation of community-driven change-makers.
